How can I check whether my tax-free shopping procedure was completed correctly?
Note: Japan's refund-based Tax-Free system (pay the tax-inclusive price first, then receive a refund after customs confirmation) starts on November 1, 2026. Until October 31, 2026, the current Tax-Free system (tax-excluded price at the register) continues. The answers below describe the system from November 1, 2026 unless stated otherwise.
Under Japan’s refund-based tax-free system starting November 1, 2026, check customs confirmation and receipt of your refund separately.
1. Customs confirmation: Scan your passport at a tax-free customs terminal at the airport or seaport. GREEN normally means that customs confirmation is complete without a physical inspection. RED means an inspection is required; follow the directions and present the goods to a customs officer. A RED result alone does not complete the procedure.
2. Visit Japan Web: Online customs procedures are available in designated pre-security departure-lobby Wi-Fi areas at seven airports: Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu Centrair, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha. Check the current official instructions for the features and screens available.
3. Refund status: Customs confirmation does not necessarily mean your money has already been refunded. Check your refund provider’s website or app, card statement or bank account. If refund-destination registration is required, complete it by the deadline specified by the shop or provider.
taxfree.jp cannot access individual purchase records or refund statuses. Refer to your receipt or refund instructions and contact the store or its refund provider.
This page provides general information. Procedures and rules can change and may vary by store, refund provider, airport or port. Check current official guidance and contact your store or refund provider about your purchase.
